Treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders (CMD - function diagnostics and therapy)

We take care of your bite

Functional diagnostics deals with craniomandibular dysfunctions - short CMD - the effects of a misalignment between the skull (cranium) and lower jaw (mandible). Since the muscles of the masticatory system are connected via function chains with the spinal muscles, CMD symptoms often spread beyond the area of the head. Neck pain, tension in the shoulder, blockages of the cervical spine or pelvic obliquity may also be part of the symptoms.

Persons who suffer ...

  • from pain in the mouth area and maxillofacial region
  • feel cracking or grinding in the jaw joints/li>
  • have painful muscle spasms
  • experience Tension headache or migraine, and/or
  • teeth grinding or the so-called "false bite"

should make an appointment with our TMJ function specialistFrau Sabine Herbricht MSc. Even small deviations can be enough to affect the highly sensitive and highly complex optimal functioning of the masticatory system and the adjacent structures.

Effects of TMJ deformity

The effects of a jaw malposition are usually felt all over the body. According to estimates of the German Society of Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, about 70 percent of the population suffer from TMJ symptoms.

Initial examination of temporomandibular joint disorders

The first examination serves to clarify the cause of your symptoms. If you experience pain, we check whether there are correlations to the masticatory system. Joint noises should be investigated for their cause to see if treatment is needed. Specific stress tests will determine whether the structures of the masticatory system are damaged. At the end of the first examination, we can decide whether and to what extent further action is required.

For the diagnosis of muscle and joint problems, accurate information about the state of the masticatory system will be made with the aid of modern computer-based methods. These methods include electromyography (EMG derivation of muscle activity) and the electronic occlusion and joint position analysis to further determine the impact of a possible malocclusion.

TMJ Therapy

To produce proper dental models, we will make impressions of the upper and lower jaw will be taken to produce dental models of your jaws - individual para-occlusal bite. Via a transfer sheet, the models are then entered into motion simulator (articulator) and analyzed. .If the analysis shows that the teeth and chewing surfaces cause a dysfunction, the malocclusion can be balanced by applying a removable plastic splint, e.g. an artificial occlusal surface in the correct jaw position. This splint is – depending on the symptoms – worn either at night or around the clock.

Orthodontic treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder

In many cases, the regulation of tooth and jaw malalignment requires fixed braces.

In addition to instructions for self-observation or care, specific muscle exercises or massage techniques can be used to alleviate the symptoms. Additionally, physiotherapy and or osteopathic measures can be prescribed. These include specific exercises to strengthen the muscles and alleviate the deformity.

Our competent dental team at the KLINIK am RING cares all about your bite.
